The Ballad Of The Monkeys
Start with a large cage.
In the cage, put a large staircase. At the top of the staircase, hang a banana on a string.
Now put five monkeys in the cage.
Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the monkey with high-volume cold water from a fire hose, but be careful to not spray the monkey on the staircase.
Replace the banana.
After a while, another monkey will make an attempt to climb the stairs with the same result, all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water.
Turn off the water and put away the hose.
Now if any monkey tries to climb the staircase, the others will make every attempt to prevent it, even though no water sprays them, they anticipate it.
Now, remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new ape sees the banana and begins to climb the staircase. To his horror, all of the other monkey beat the crap out of it. After a very few such attempts, it will know that if it tries to climb the staircase, it will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original monkeys and replace it with a new one.
The process repeats, the newcomer goes to the staircase and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm, it is no longer unsure of the expected behavior.
Again, replace a third original monkey with a new one. The process repeats.
Remember, two of the four monkeys that are beating the shit out of it have no idea why they are not permitted to climb the staircase or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkey, all the apes which have been sprayed with the hose have been replaced, nevertheless, no monkey will ever approach the stairs.
And why is this so?
“Because that’s the way it’s always been around here.”
