“Writing is easy. You only need to stare at a piece of blank paper until your forehead bleeds”
“It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.”
“See first, think later, then test. But always see first. Otherwise you will only see what you were expecting. Most scientists forget that.”
“If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.”
“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”
“One who condones evil is just as guilty as the one who perpetrates it.”
“We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters, or we will die together like fools.”
“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
In the cage, put a large staircase. At the top of the staircase, hang a banana on a string.
Now put five monkeys in the cage.
Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the monkey with high-volume cold water from a fire hose, but be careful to not spray the monkey on the staircase.
Replace the banana.
After a while, another monkey will make an attempt to climb the stairs with the same result, all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water.
Turn off the water and put away the hose.
Now if any monkey tries to climb the staircase, the others will make every attempt to prevent it, even though no water sprays them, they anticipate it.
Now, remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new ape sees the banana and begins to climb the staircase. To his horror, all of the other monkey beat the crap out of it. After a very few such attempts, it will know that if it tries to climb the staircase, it will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original monkeys and replace it with a new one.
The process repeats, the newcomer goes to the staircase and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm, it is no longer unsure of the expected behavior.
Again, replace a third original monkey with a new one. The process repeats.
Remember, two of the four monkeys that are beating the shit out of it have no idea why they are not permitted to climb the staircase or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkey, all the apes which have been sprayed with the hose have been replaced, nevertheless, no monkey will ever approach the stairs.
And why is this so?
“Because that’s the way it’s always been around here.”
